Akita Katana: Minimalism Done Right in 1060 Carbon Steel
Some katanas shout. The Akita Katana keeps quiet and lets the steel carry the conversation. No gilded fittings, no gimmicks, just a clean traditional silhouette named after Japan's Akita region. An honest baseline blade for collectors and first-time buyers alike.
Spec Sheet at a Glance
- Steel: hand-forged 1060 high carbon steel with a visible hamon along the hardened edge
- Construction: full tang, built for balance and durability
- Overall length: 105 cm
- Blade length: 72 cm
- Guard: solid iron tsuba in a classic circular shape
- Handle: cotton ito wrapped over synthetic rayskin (same)
- Scabbard: lacquered wooden saya
- Edge: your choice of sharpened or unsharpened
The Case for 1060 Steel
At 0.60% carbon, 1060 is the workhorse of functional sword making: hard enough to take and hold an edge, springy enough to absorb the stresses that crack harder steels. Traditional heat treatment leaves a genuine temper line on this blade, not an etched imitation. If understated 1060 blades are your thing, compare the Black Blade Katana and the Enma Katana.
Sharp for Cutting, Blunt for Display
Ordered unsharpened, the Akita works as a display piece or an iaido trainer if you practise draws and forms. Ordered sharpened, the full tang 1060 blade stands up to backyard cutting sessions. Either way, read our katana laws in Australia guide first to see where your state stands.
Forged to Order in Longquan, Delivered Across Australia
Each Akita is made to order at our partner workshop in Longquan, a city that has forged blades for centuries. Allow 5 to 20 business days for forging and finishing, then tracked delivery to your door anywhere in Australia. Customs charges or GST may apply on arrival; these are set by Australian authorities, not by us. Or browse the full katana collection to compare styles first.
Two Quick Questions
Is this a good first katana? Yes. Plain fittings, proven 1060 steel and full tang construction make it a forgiving entry point that still handles like a proper sword.
How much upkeep does carbon steel need? 1060 is not stainless, so wipe it down and oil it lightly every month or two, sharpened or not.
